FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What Are Lake Rights? Lake Arrowhead is a private lake and is managed by the ALA
(Arrowhead Lake Association - for best information please call 909-337-2595).
Generally, lake rights refer to a property owner's right to purchase a dock, launch a
boat on the lake, swim, fish, and have access to certain areas of the shoreline. Homes
within a boundary, referred to as being "In the Woods," have lake rights. Cynthia can
provide you with a map depicting that boundary. Use the email option and include your
mailing address. Homes in the surrounding areas of Twin Peaks, Cedar Glen, Aqua
Fria, Deer Lodge Park, Rim Forest, and others do not have lake rights.
Can I Launch a Skidoo on the Lake? No. Please call Arrowhead Lake Association -
909-337-2595.
What Do I Need to Launch a Boat on the Lake? You need to own property "In the
Woods." Please call Arrowhead Lake Association - 909-337-2595.
Isn't Cheaper to Build? One would have to investigate the particulars to answer that
question adequately. Generally, there are many existing homes that are more
affordable than building.
What Are the Property Lines? This question may come up when you are looking at a
property. A real estate agent will not know the exact property lines of most properties
due to the fact that homes in the area are not similar to tract homes down the hill
where the boundaries are usually defined by block walls, curbs, and etc. Every
property is different. A plot map may be obtained, but the only way to know the exact
property lines of a property is to have a civil engineer shoot the corners for you.
What Are Utility Costs? Electrical is comparable to down the hill (Call Edison - Rim
Forest). Our water comes from the lake and is generally more expensive. Sewer
depends on the number of fixtures you have in your home (Call LACSD
909-337-8555). Gas costs are, as are all other consumption-based utilities,
dependent on usage. Costs during the winter depend on the temperature, the amount
of insulation, and type of windows in your home (Call So.Cal. Gas 800-427-2200).
Local telephone (Verizon) is about the same.
Can I Use My Cell Phone Up There? Yes, but sometimes the coverage is spotty
depending on your phone and where you are. Dual (digital plus cell) signal types of
phones seem to do the best (Verizon). Coverage is line of sight, so if you have a good
line of sight, the more likely it is that you will to get a good signal.
How Are the Schools? The schools in Lake Arrowhead are a source of pride among
the locals. Many have received awards for academic excellence. Rim Unified School
District 909-336-2031.
When Does It Snow? Although we enjoy rather mild winters, the probability of snow is
greatest between November and March. Snow has been known to fall as late as
Mother's Day. It is important to note that; as in any other mountainous area, the
weather on the mountain is unpredictable. It can rain or snow when you least expect it.
Preparation is the key. It is a good idea to carry chains, a shovel, blankets, and water
in your car or SUV. A pack, like the type used for earthquake preparedness, is good
to have in your vehicle at all times. Although snow fall has not been a serious problem
in quite a few years, in March of the early 90's, we received three feet of the "white
stuff" which caused some people minor problems. Every year, the locals expect the big
one - the so-called 50 or 100 year storm, which could dump snow up to the eaves of
some homes. If you have a SUV, do not make the mistake of not carrying chains! The
CHP sometimes will require that even 4X4's put on chains. Minimally, they will require
you have chains in your vehicle and may want to see them. Also, make sure you know
how to put on your chains without assistance, how to operate the four-wheel drive
system you own, and that the system is operating properly before coming up.
Last, Southern Californians rarely have any experience driving on snow or ice. Always
keep in mind that speed on a dry road can translate to disaster when you hit a patch of
snow or ice. What may look like a dry road may be "black ice." Drive slow! Let people
who disregard the danger pass you. Stay calm and avoid hard braking.
How Far Are the Snow Skiing Resorts? Snow Valley is around thirty minutes from Lake
Arrowhead. You can get to the other Big Bear Resorts within an hour if the roads are
dry.
How Many Restaurants Are There? Last count there was over 40 restaurants,
delicatessens, and coffee shops in the area.
